Welcome to my Capstone Portfolio

162255843_b073b0a9b1_mIn 1995 I graduated from college with a degree in English. I had always planned to go to graduate school but in the meantime life happened. I moved to Portland, got married, and had a son. Once my son was in grade school I began to reconsider graduate school. I debated about whether or not I wanted to apply, it’s so expensive, do I have the time to devote to homework, etc.?. After 10+ years I decided it was time I give it a try.

Now I only needed to decide what degree to to earn, all I knew was that I didn’t want to do English. What would be a book lover’s dream job? Working in a library, of course. I didn’t really know what a librarian did but I like books, organization, and people – a perfect match.

When I began the School of Library and Information Management (SLIM) program at Emporia State University in 2007, I had two goals – to work in a public library, preferably at Multnomah County Library (MCL) and to gain technology experience, beyond sending e-mail. After learning about other types of libraries and librarians from my cohorts, my understanding of libraries has grown and my professional goals have expanded to include both community college libraries and small public libraries.

The purpose of this portfolio is to showcase my development as an MLS graduate student during these past, and very busy, two years. Included are a few of my papers that reflect the outcomes and values of the SLIM program.

Enjoy!
